AYC Formalizes Community Partnership with the Urban Native Youth Association

When I was first presented with the opportunity to create an Aboriginal youth cycling program in Vancouver it was important to look for organizations within the community that were already providing meaningful programming to Native youth. With a 22 year history of providing programming to Native youth in Vancouver, the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) stood out as a prime candidate. Their AYF Sports and Recreation program’s overall goal of encouraging healthy lifestyles, leadership, and skills development amongst Native youth was exactly what I was hoping to achieve with AYC. After working with UNYA for almost a year I am very pleased to announce that we are formalizing our community partnership! As an official community partner, UNYA’s AYF Sports and Recreation Program supports the participation of Native youth, ages 11-24, in select AYC activities. In addition UNYA’s AYF staff are able to provide supervision and transportation to and from East Vancouver (East Hastings Street near Commercial Drive) to the velodrome for Native Youth participants.

I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with, and learn, from this organization and the wonderful people that work and volunteer there and I trust that the relationship will continue to grow as time passes.
